The destruction of Israel is literally an official policy of the Iranian regime. They have a whole holiday for it. Every head of the regime is openly and regularly talking about it, in official speeches. They literally have a huge countdown clock on their main square, counting down to the "destruction of Israel" (in 2040, apparently). 

Not to mention, they have spent billions arming and training a bunch of proxies with the sole intent of destroying Israel, and those proxies are responsible for thousands of missiles and civilian deaths in Israel, most notably of course October 7th.

So what I can piece together is two waves of around 150 ballistic missiles.

The first wave was targeted at Tel Aviv, likely the IDF HQ there and that's where we got most of the footage from.

The second wave was targeted at IDF bases in the South and North. Israel has better operational security there so we don't see any major footage yet. The Iranians are already pushing "Casualties at Nevatim airbase" but honestly they can't know that. And sometimes they call every base in the south "Nevatim".

How does Iran have such poor operational security that Israel knows the locations of key scientists and military leaders? Is it that Israel just looks up their address online or via data brokers that send junk mail and just attack at night assuming people will be at home in their beds and the assumption that Iranian air defenses are incapable of shooting down anything so Israel just goes for it? Do the Iranians have Russian levels of corruption and betray whatever information they may have to Mossad for bribes? One angle that is still unknown is the Iranian military leadership is very unpopular in Iran, and there may not be a rally around the flag moment for Iran. Perhaps even the opposite, this could be a good opportunity for insurrection now that the Iranian military leadership is in disarray. On Natanz and Fordow:

Israel has been very successful in suppressing and destroying Iranian air defence assets. They've also announced a continuation of their campaign for multiple days, perhaps a few weeks. In addition, some statements spoke of different phases of the operation, this being phase one.

It seems likely that the buried nuclear facilities, one of which has allegedly not been hit at all so far, are prime targets and will be attacked at some point during this air campaign, likely during a different phase. However, as many people and the often cited RUSI article have pointed out, Israel doesn't have any adequate delivery mechanisms for a bomb large enough to seriously threaten these buried facilities. The GBU-57 (or an equivalent weapon) can only be carried by the US B2 or B21, because they're stealthy, fast and large enough. 

But if Israel continues to degrade and destroy Iranian air defenses for another few days or a week, is a stealthy and fast delivery mechanism even needed any more? At some point, the skies above Iran look likely to be almost completely open. Once such air superiority is achieved, wouldn't a "Rapid Dragon" style delivery mechanism be sufficient? 

A C-130, upgraded with additional missile defense measures, accompanied by a strong contingent of fighter aircraft, could drop some variant of a GBU-57 out the back onto these facilities and just fly back home.

Many "backpacker routes", especially in Latam and Asia are littered with Israelis on their post military travel.

From a military perspective, the past ~20 months have been an almost unimaginable success for Israel. 

The sudden and unexpected downfall of Assad severed the "Shia Crescent" that connected Iran to its proxies in Lebanon and Gaza, allowed Israel to completely annihilate Syrian GBAD, expand their control over the high ground around the Golan Heights, and removed Russia and the IRGC from the board in Syria. This allows Syria to now act as a springboard for attacks into Iran, as we've seen over the past day.

The Israeli response to the October 6 attack by Hamas led to the near total annihilation of the group as a threat to Israel, with the added bonus of bringing Hezbollah into the fight. Israel has since crippled the military and civilian leadership of Hezbollah and destroyed much of their equipment stockpiles as well (which will no longer be able to be easily supplied by Iran due to the loss of Assad), almost completely neutering them as a threat in the near to medium term. As a result, no response from Hamas or Hezbollah to the Israeli attack has happened thus far, nor is any meaningful retaliation from either expected.

In response to the Israeli decapitation and neutering of Hezbollah, Iran launched a massive combined drone and ballistic missile attack on Israel that caused effectively no damage, while also likely exposing hidden Iranian launch facilities, stockpiles, and other sites that have since been targeted. Notably, Israel launched a measured response to the Iranian attack late last year, that appears to have been primarily focused on degrading Iranian GBAD and probing the country for weaknesses, which they appear to have exploited to the maximum. The details of the ongoing strikes are still being revealed, but it appears the attack is similar in scale and effectiveness to the one launched against Hezbollah, an absolutely stunning success, with more strikes still expected.

Taken altogether, the past ~20 months of kinetic activity have completely crippled Israel's biggest military threats and caused extensive damage to Iran's proxy forces across the entire region, giving the country more breathing room than it's enjoyed in decades. But they dont come without a significant price however. For all the military success achieved by Israel thus far, the damage to their international repuation has been incredibly steep, particularly due to the high civilian casualties in Gaza and credible claims of a planned ethnic cleansing, the perception of a large portion of the global population that Israel is the aggressor, and increasing tensions with other powers in the Middle East, most notably Turkey.

It's also worth noting that despite the immense damage done thus far to Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Iranian regime, none of the three have been completely destroyed, and its unlikely that Hezbollah or the Iranian regime will be toppled from airstrikes alone. I can't help but feel like, despite the immense, unprecedented military success of the past ~2 years, that all Israel has really achieved is to delay future conflict at the cost of increasing their own international isolation. 

For almost 80 years now, Israel has successfully fended off attacks from its neighbors, and pulled off several pre-emptive strikes that have reduced the immediate threat posed by some of their most powerful adversaries. But can this string of military successes really continue forever? I'm not so sure. While the governments of many Middle Eastern states have grown more open to diplomatic ties with Israel, the populations remain overwhelmingly hostile and Israeli actions over the past 2 years have done nothing to address this issue. In fact, they almost certainly have fuelled hostility to the country which aren't likely to subside any time soon.

They have multiple countries between them so any direct conflict is highly unlikely, so my guess is they ll continues taking pot shots at one another with missiles/drones or through proxies.

This is the part that blows my mind. Iron Dome was built for Hamas's garage-made rockets, not hypersonic ballistic missiles. It's like bringing a fly swatter to stop bullets.

October 2024 wasn't some failed attack - it was Iran showing they can hit whatever they want in Israel. 32 direct hits on Israeli airbases including near F-35 hangars. That was Iran being gentle.

In a real war, they'd launch 500+ missiles in the first wave. Israel's defense systems would be overwhelmed in minutes.

Bottom Line

This isn't about who has better pilots or tactics. It's pure physics and geography. Iran has missiles that can't be stopped hitting a country too small to absorb the damage. Israel's only real defense is that Iran doesn't actually want to fight this war.

The scariest part? We already saw a preview in October, and Iran was clearly holding back. In a real conflict, it would be over before Israel could even respond effectively.

Uh ... Israel's Iron Dome deals with plenty of slower threats, and David's Sling deals with threats even slower than that. The Arrow system deals with faster incoming missiles and is the true missile shield - Iron Dome is more of a rocket and limited missile shield. It's a multilayered defence. 

Neither side is getting at the other on the ground, so this will be decided by missiles and Airforce. Israel can reach Iran, has better missiles, better weapons, better intelligence penetration, and has plenty of capabilities Iran doesn't. In a pinch, Israel can fire off a couple of nukes at military bases (likely Airforce bases) to take out (air) assets. Israeli stealth planes can go to town against Iranian planes on the ground and not worry about being intercepted.

Iran can't reach Israel by air, and even if it could it would be obliterated by the Israeli Air Force.

Iran has missiles, but they seem to be largely older and inaccurate designs, and the capabilities of their newer designs are not demonstrated and are likely over stated. Israel's various defensive systems can handle them or most of them, and that's assuming Israel doesn't destroy or sabotage them first (which it seems Israel did in fact do).

Israel's goal for victory is to destroy Iran's nuclear development and keep Iran from hurting Israel, as well as punishing Iran for causing these proxy wars. Or send Israel accomplished that in the first hour of the attack, along with taking out certain high level leaders. 

Iran's goal for victory is... What? Destruction of Israel? They couldn't even get into position to try. So I'm not sure how you rang to measure victory, but Iran is without a path to it.

Iran has troops but it is also far away, so invasion would be difficult. Iran does not have nukes and Israel does. Iran also does not have new American weapons or decent air defence which Israel does, so whatever they do throw around is liable to end up as clouds of exo-atmospheric debris at the hands of the Iron Dome.


Also... This wouldn't be existential for Iran in the way it would be for Israel. Sure, it'll likely be the end of the regime, but Iranians hate the regime anyway and certainly won't queue up to die for it like they did in the 80s when fighting Saddam.


Meanwhile Israelis know the theocrats want them ALL dead - and that sort of threat is liable to make a person fight. Nobody fights as well as they do when fighting for their lives.

Have you look at a map? You're talking about Iran and Israel, not Iran and Iraq. Iran has no border with Israel, so it can't use its troops. The only thing that can be used is air power, missiles, and what not. While Iran's weapons have come a long, long way, they know there are limits to their power. Iran is a regional power, but it has its limitations. Don't get me wrong, Iran has some impressive missiles, decent enough drones, but against Israel's air force, they'd be in trouble. That said, Israel is trained by the US to some extent and gets some of the best equipment. Iran has to mostly depend on itself.

As much as I really don't want Iran to have a nuclear weapon - now or ever - I'm uncertain of the wisdom of this. At best, this only sets them back by a few years. It won't destroy all their stockpiles or the scientific knowledge to start fresh. At worst it could easily have geopolitical implications far beyond the region.

If there is an attack, I think we'll at least see a shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz. The effects of that could be more pronounced than the damage Israel 'might' be able to do to Iran's nuclear infrastructure.
